The mute swan has a near faultless image of marriage bliss and family life but as with all animals during the mating and breeding season, aggressive and possessive behaviour is frequent. I came across a 'cob', male mute swan, who over the period of an hour pecked and plucked a one year old swan to death. Clearly the young swan was seen as a threat to the adult's dominance.
