Mark Steinmetz

Another great book, published last year by Stanley/Barker, was Past K-Ville by Mark Steinmetz. His is a quiet aesthetic and deeply nostalgic, albeit not his intention. His work is a slow burn, a concentrated gaze that yearns to be part of what he's looking at and at the same time looks back at you with a gentle understanding of person and place. Steinmetz's work drifts in and out as if time and subject are forever in stasis and all the while he remains an invisible hand. "His cool empathy" is evident in the way he observes and in the quality of his printing. His idiosyncratic layout and hidden narrative ensures that, as viewers, we are witness to a remarkable "strength of presence".
