Documentary photography demands the viewer to respond in a certain way. It takes the decision, it's fact, the wrappers are off.

I'm at my desk looking at a birthday present from my daughter. I experience an enjoyment looking at the present as I might if I were to open the parcel. I don't know if my sense of enjoyment would be surpassed or dispelled were I to open it.

A photograph or a sequence of photographs operating within the paradigm of my birthday present would remain forever intact, beguiling, a relationship between artist and viewer that is a personal discourse between intent and consequence, the not knowing.
