Roger Mayne & Vilhelm Hammershoi

At the Photographers Gallery in London to see the work of Roger Mayne and in particular his photographs of Southam Street taken in the early 1960's. What struck me was how the street was this imaginary space, imagined by children, without any limitations. Today's streets are zones of restriction, governance and endless cars. In Roger Mayne's photographs the street is freedom.

Roger Mayne's quiet reflective photographs remind me of an exhibition of paintings by Vilhelm Hammershoi, held at the Royal Academy. I'm not sure why and I had never before come across Hammershoi but was instantly enthralled by his ability to usher you in to a space.
