PAULA KONIG

As an artist with a background in Fine Arts, Painting, History, and Cultural Studies, I strive to work in an interdisciplinary, non-extractive, and ecologically
conscious way. In my practice, I’ve used natural pigments for large-scale paintings, waters and sunlight for cyanotypes, and collected locally situated
(hi-)stories shown as various media installations.

Painting has been my primary medium, along with photography and sound recording. I look forward to using these to trace our trip. If conditions allow,
I’m also interested in extending my experience of processing natural pigments from shore materials. I’m excited to work (collectively) on an (audio-)visual

archive, including stories, images of rocks, algae, animals, shells, coastlines, as well as sounds, wind, and currents—both as research and the develop-
ment of a sound archive work.

I’ve recently started writing after prompts to help break thinking patterns and find new words for my interests. I plan to continue this practice during theresidency. I see it as a collective practice either as writing or recording somebodies voice, as no two experiences are the same. As poet Adrienne Richsays, “Something that doesn’t smell like earth is not good for the earth.” This resonates with your prompt “to know the world we live in.” Before knowing, there will be sensing, listening, writing, observing, recording, and collecting what surrounds us.

I’m particularly interested in learning to sail and navigate with the elements, especially the wind and currents, as a way to connect more deeply withthem. I’m also looking forward to exploring traditional navigation techniques based on the sky, if these skills travel with us. So I’m curious about the poe-tic notion of being at sea while searching for orientation. I have some previous sailing experience and have never felt seasick. Most recently, I traveledto the north of Svalbard, it was there that I discovered my love for being on a boat and the imaginative space it offers. I’m eager to return to this environ-ment and learn from everything and everyone around.
